What is this Nerd Nite anyway, you ask? Nerd Nite is a lecture event that aims at a casual, relaxed, and let’s be honest, slightly inebriated evening of academic fun times. The idea is for people to have a good time with friends over drinks while learning a thing or two. Our unofficial tag line is “It’s like the Discovery Channel – with beer!”

This next Nerd Nite HK will feature the team behind organizing your favorite nerdy event. Come learn about our different topics of expertise!
Speaker 1: Tania Wu
Topic: The Art of Gathering 4th Spaces and What It Means
Speaker 2: Sam Rogers
Topic: Venom: What Doesn’t Kill Us Makes Us Stronger
In this talk, Sam will go over some interesting facts about venom, highlight some unique venomous animals, and introduce a few ways venom has been used to save lives.
BIO: Sam has been interested in venomous animals ever since the first time they saw a black widow spider in their garage in California. How could something so small be so harmful, make the adults so afraid? Over the years Sam’s interest in venom led them to working with local reptile rehabs (though not often with venomous snakes) and ignited a passion for venomics. They also have a background in education and psychology, and they love any chance to be a science educator.
Speaker 3: Dr. Daisy Tan
Topic: Stem Cells Explained: Your body’s tiny repair crew is a game-changer
In my talk, I’ll share what makes these cells so unique and their role in our body’s ability to repair and maintain itself. I’ll also address the hype around stem cells in the beauty industry, clarifying what’s actually in those products and separating fact from fiction.
BIO: Daisy, originally from the Philippines, came to Hong Kong to pursue her Ph.D. in biochemistry and stem cell biology at HKU. Passionate about science, medicine, and biotech, she’s dedicated to making science accessible to everyone. Since 2025, she’s been organizing Nerd Nite HK, sharing her curiosity and bringing life-relevant knowledge to the public.
